The succession of the Tooro Kingdom has taken a dramatic turn after the Babiito Clan Succession Committee elected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the preferred successor to the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Prince Edward is the son of the late Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma and a grandson of the former Tooro monarch, Omukama Sir George David Rukidi Kamurasi III.
The decision places the Kijanangoma royal line at the centre of the unfolding transition following the death of King Oyo on August 27, 2026, aged 34. Oyo had ruled Tooro since ascending the throne as a three-year-old in 1995.
The latest development is particularly significant given the history of succession disputes within the Tooro royal family.
Prince David Kijanangoma, another member of the same royal family, previously challenged King Oyo's leadership in 2015, arguing that the monarch had failed to adequately perform his duties. The dispute triggered a government-backed mediation process.
Historical records also show that Christopher Kijanangoma was among the sons of Sir George David Rukidi who were identified in connection with the royal succession. A 2015 Uganda Radio Network report, citing the late king's will, listed Patrick Olimi Kaboyo, Christopher Kijanangoma, Steven Karamagi and James Mugenyi among those in the line of succession.
The election of Prince Edward therefore introduces a new chapter in a royal lineage that has remained closely connected to Tooro's succession question for generations.
However, the committee's election should be distinguished from the formal enthronement of a new Omukama. The traditional procedures leading to the public declaration and coronation remain an important part of the transition.
King Oyo's death has left Tooro preparing for both the burial of its long-serving monarch and the eventual installation of his successor.
With Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma now emerging from the Babiito succession process, attention shifts to the next steps that will formally usher the new monarch onto the Tooro throne.
