Uganda has recorded a major milestone on the international military stage after Bakira Ruyondo emerged as the first Ugandan to win the prestigious International Sword at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.
The honour is one of Sandhurst’s most coveted awards for foreign officer cadets. It is presented to the international cadet considered by the Commandant to have been the best of the intake.
Ruyondo’s achievement places his name in the history of the world-renowned military academy, which trains officer cadets from Britain and numerous countries across the globe.
The International Sword is sponsored by the State of Kuwait in memory of Sheikh Ali Al Sabah, the country’s former Defence Minister. Sandhurst describes it as an award for the international cadet judged to be the best in the course.
The achievement is particularly significant for Uganda, as Ruyondo becomes the first Ugandan known to have captured the prestigious distinction after completing the demanding Sandhurst officer training programme.
The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is renowned for its rigorous training, testing cadets in areas including leadership, physical endurance, military skills, discipline and character. Recent recipients of the International Sword have included officers from Thailand, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Zambia and other countries.
Ruyondo’s achievement is therefore more than a personal triumph. It represents a major moment for Uganda’s military and adds another chapter to the country’s growing presence at one of the world's most prestigious officer-training institutions.
The historic recognition is expected to further raise the profile of Ugandan officers undergoing professional military training abroad, while placing Ruyondo among an elite group of international officers who have earned Sandhurst’s highest distinction for foreign cadets.
