Bamutakudde Village in Mukono District came alive with a different kind of bulungi bwansi over the weekend as residents combined community cleaning with an ambitious tree-planting exercise that saw 2,000 seedlings put into the ground.
Led by LC1 Chairman Solomon Serwanjja, the community planted 1,000 cherry blossom trees along village roads and distributed another 1,000 fruit trees to homes and gardens.
The exercise was held as part of the National Cleaning Day activities, with Good Forests Foundation Uganda supporting the initiative through the provision of seedlings and community guidance on tree care and maintenance.
For Serwanjja, however, the exercise was about much more than cleaning roads and planting trees.
It was another step in his five-year ambition to transform Bamutakudde into what he describes as a model village—one where communities work together to solve local challenges and create opportunities for residents.
Residents reportedly started gathering early in the morning, sweeping roads, collecting rubbish and clearing their surroundings before turning their attention to the massive greening campaign.
The roadside cherry blossoms are expected to eventually give the village a distinctive appearance, while the fruit trees—including varieties such as oranges and avocados—could provide households with food and potential sources of income.
The initiative also brought back the spirit of traditional bulungi bwansi, where communities come together voluntarily to work for the common good. The communal effort was capped with shared meals, reinforcing the social bonds behind the environmental campaign.
Serwanjja has outlined a broader vision for Bamutakudde that goes beyond tree planting. His plans include improving access to clean water, creating youth training opportunities and strengthening household incomes through community-driven development.
Good Forests Foundation Uganda, which works with communities on landscape restoration and agroforestry, says its approach combines environmental protection with livelihoods by supporting farmers with different varieties of trees and sustainable practices.
Now, the challenge for Bamutakudde residents will be ensuring the 2,000 newly planted trees survive and thrive.
But if the enthusiasm witnessed during the clean-up is anything to go by, the village's leaders are hoping the seedlings will grow into more than just trees becoming a lasting symbol of what communities can achieve when they work together.
For Bamutakudde, Saturday's message was simple: they did not just clean their village.
They planted its future.
