A fresh wave of online criticism has erupted against National Unity Platform (NUP) president Bobi Wine after photos of his children enjoying a summer vacation in the United States circulated widely on social media.

The images quickly became the center of political debate, with critics drawing comparisons between the comfortable lives of the opposition leader's family abroad and the situation of some NUP supporters who remain detained in Luzira Prison.

Across X, Facebook and TikTok, several users mocked the jailed supporters, referencing the party's popular slogan, "People Power, Our Power," while questioning whether ordinary supporters were paying the highest price for political activism.

Some posts also compared the situation to children of senior government officials, including references to Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, arguing that political elites on both sides ultimately ensure the safety and comfort of their own families while their supporters bear the consequences of political confrontation.

The online discussion has been marked by sharply divided opinions.

Critics accused Bobi Wine of allowing his family to enjoy life overseas while many loyal supporters continue to face detention and ongoing court cases.

However, his supporters pushed back, arguing that his children should not be dragged into Uganda's political battles. Others pointed out that Bobi Wine has previously stated he relocated members of his family abroad because of security concerns stemming from his political activities.

The renewed criticism comes at a time when the fate of detained opposition supporters remains a sensitive issue in Uganda's political landscape. Human rights organizations and opposition leaders have repeatedly called for the release of individuals they describe as political prisoners, while government authorities have maintained that arrests are carried out in accordance with the law.

As of publication, Bobi Wine had not publicly responded to the latest social media criticism surrounding the vacation photos.

The debate continues to dominate online conversations, highlighting the deep political divisions in Uganda as supporters and critics alike argue over leadership, personal responsibility and the sacrifices associated with opposition politics.
