Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has officially put 2031 on the political radar after declaring that he intends to contest for Uganda’s presidency in the next election cycle.
In a post on X, Kainerugaba stated: “I will stand for the highest office in the land in 2031. And we will win by the grace of Almighty God.”
The declaration marks a major return to an ambition he has spoken about publicly for several years.
Kainerugaba had previously announced that he would not appear on the ballot in the 2026 presidential election, instead throwing his support behind his father, President Yoweri Museveni. In September 2024, he said he would focus on serving in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces and endorsed Museveni for another term.
That decision placed his presidential ambitions on hold, but did not erase them.
Kainerugaba had first openly declared an intention to seek the presidency in 2026 in 2023, saying he would stand with the backing of God and Uganda’s younger generation.
With the 2026 election cycle now behind the country, his latest message gives his supporters a new target: 2031.
The announcement is likely to reignite debate over Uganda’s political succession, particularly because Kainerugaba is President Museveni’s son and has risen to become one of the country’s most powerful figures.
He was appointed Chief of Defence Forces in 2024, a move that intensified speculation about his long-term political future. Recent international reporting has continued to describe him as a likely successor to Museveni, although the president has not publicly confirmed a formal succession plan.
For now, Kainerugaba’s message is unequivocal: he is looking beyond the current political chapter and setting his sights on Uganda’s highest office in 2031.
The race may still be years away, but with one post, Gen Muhoozi has once again placed his presidential ambitions firmly at the centre of Uganda’s political conversation.
