The Buganda Kingdom has approved a record UGX 409.3 billion budget for the 2026/2027 financial year, marking a major milestone in the kingdom's continued financial transformation and development agenda.
The budget was passed by the Buganda Lukiiko during the ceremonial Embalirira Y'Obwakabaka, where the kingdom's financial priorities for the coming year were formally presented.
Second Deputy Katikkiro and Minister of Finance, Owek. Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa, tabled the estimates before the Lukiiko, revealing a significant 34 percent increase from the UGX 305.5 billion budget approved for the previous financial year.
The ambitious spending plan comes after the kingdom reported strong financial performance, with revenue collections reaching UGX 302.5 billion during the last financial year. The latest figures underline Buganda's steady progress in strengthening its internal revenue and expanding investments in key sectors.
The growth also highlights the remarkable financial journey the kingdom has made under Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga. Since assuming office in 2013, when the kingdom's budget stood at just UGX 38.8 billion, Buganda has consistently expanded its revenue base, recording year-on-year increases that have culminated in the largest budget in its history.
This year's budget prioritizes strategic investments in education, healthcare, cultural preservation, and economic empowerment programmes aimed at improving livelihoods across Buganda's 18 counties. Kingdom officials say these sectors remain central to the long-term vision of strengthening communities while preserving Buganda's cultural heritage.
The budget presentation attracted several high-profile guests, including Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, religious leaders, kingdom officials, clan representatives, and other invited dignitaries, underscoring the significance of the annual Embalirira Y'Obwakabaka ceremony.
The record budget signals Buganda Kingdom's continued focus on sustainable development, service delivery, and economic resilience as it seeks to build on more than a decade of steady financial growth and institutional expansion.
