KAMPALA - Fans know Jamaican dancehall firebrand Spice for her jaw-dropping bodysuits, daring stage outfits and headline-grabbing fashion risks. But when the self-proclaimed “Queen of Dancehall” stepped into the powerful Buganda Kingdom in Uganda this week, the singer shocked everyone by covering up from head to toe in full cultural respect.

And social media cannot stop talking about it.

The usually provocative star, whose real name is Grace Hamilton, traded revealing outfits for elegant traditional attire during her official visit to Bulange Mengo, the administrative seat of the Buganda Kingdom where she met the kingdom’s Prime Minister, known locally as the Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga.

Photos from the event showed Spice fully dressed in a modest, culturally respectful outfit, even kneeling while greeting elders, a major sign of respect in Buganda culture. Ugandans online were stunned by the transformation.

“From dancehall diva to royal daughter overnight!” one commenter joked.

Another wrote: “If Spice can cover up for culture, what excuse do tourists have?”

The visit was part of a week-long cultural immersion organized by the Uganda Tourism Board together with the Buganda Kingdom ahead of her first-ever Ugandan concert at Lugogo Cricket Oval.

But the biggest surprise came when Spice was officially welcomed into Buganda culture itself.

In a colorful royal ceremony, the singer was given the Kiganda name “Nankula” and assigned to the Enkula (Rhino) clan — a symbolic honor rarely given to foreign celebrities.

Buganda officials praised the star for embracing local traditions instead of behaving like a “fly-in, fly-out celebrity.”

Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga reportedly used the occasion to promote Uganda’s cultural richness and urged international visitors to see Uganda as more than just “boda bodas and traffic jams.”

Ugandan media outlets quickly splashed the images across headlines, many highlighting how the famously risqué entertainer suddenly appeared “fully gomesi” and culturally conservative while at the kingdom headquarters.

Online reactions were explosive.

Some fans praised Spice for showing maturity and respect:

“She understood the assignment.”

Others joked that Uganda had performed a “fashion miracle” on the dancehall icon.

The move also sparked wider conversation about how celebrities adapt their image depending on where they are in the world. Critics pointed out that Spice’s brand has long been built around sexually provocative fashion, making the dramatic switch all the more fascinating.

Still, tourism officials are celebrating the moment as a public relations jackpot.

According to reports, the Uganda Tourism Board wants visiting international artists to experience Uganda’s culture before performing and Spice became the first major foreign artist to fully participate in the initiative.

And if social media buzz is anything to go by, “Nankula” may have just pulled off the biggest image makeover of the year.
