A public disagreement between Dr. Sarah Bireete and Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, erupted on social media, drawing attention from political observers and online commentators.
The exchange began when Bireete posted a message questioning whether active diplomats should acquire dual citizenship in countries where they are accredited. In her post, she appeared to reference Ambassador Ayebare and raised questions about diplomatic neutrality, allegiance, and the responsibilities of representing Uganda abroad.
Her remarks quickly attracted attention online, with users debating the relationship between citizenship, diplomatic service, and international representation.
But Ambassador Ayebare did not stay silent.
In a strongly worded response, the veteran diplomat pushed back against the claims, arguing that he serves as Uganda’s Ambassador to the United Nations rather than being accredited to the U.S. State Department. He also stated that other Ugandan diplomats in New York possess dual citizenship after years in the diaspora.
The exchange then took a personal turn.
Ayebare accused Bireete of questioning his loyalty to Uganda despite what he described as a 27-year diplomatic career. He further referenced Bireete’s past legal troubles during her time at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, telling her to stop presenting herself as a moral authority.
The unusually direct response immediately fueled discussion across social media platforms, with supporters of both figures weighing in on the heated war of words.
Neither side appeared ready to back down as the online confrontation exposed deeper disagreements about public accountability, diplomatic conduct, and the standards expected of senior Ugandan officials.
For now, what began as a question about dual citizenship has evolved into one of the most talked-about political exchanges on social media, placing two prominent Ugandan figures at the center of a rapidly growing public debate.
