A dramatic new chapter has unfolded in Uganda’s high-profile treason case after People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) president and senior lawyer Erias Lukwago was reportedly charged with misprision of treason, placing him at the center of the same legal storm in which he has been representing opposition veteran Dr. Kizza Besigye.
The development comes just days after Lukwago’s controversial arrest by security operatives at his Wakaliga residence, an incident that sparked condemnation from opposition leaders, lawyers, and human rights advocates. Reports indicate that security personnel surrounded and raided his home before taking him into custody.
Lukwago has been one of the lead members of Besigye’s legal team throughout the ongoing treason proceedings. Besigye and his aide Obeid Lutale are already facing charges of treason and misprision of treason alongside UPDF officer Capt. Denish Oyaa Oola. The charges carry severe penalties under Ugandan law.
The arrest occurred amid heightened tensions between Lukwago and Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba after the opposition lawyer sought to serve court documents linked to a separate legal dispute. The incident quickly escalated into a major political controversy, drawing reactions from the Uganda Law Society and opposition parties.
The exact particulars of the alleged misprision of treason charge against Lukwago have not yet been fully detailed in public court records reviewed so far. However, the reported move significantly raises the stakes in an already explosive case that continues to dominate Uganda’s political conversation.
With Besigye’s treason trial already underway and Lukwago now reportedly facing related accusations, attention is shifting to the next court appearances, where the legal and political implications of this latest development are expected to become clearer.
