Former Kampala Lord Mayor and President of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), Erias Lukwago, has been transferred from Luzira Murchison Bay Prison to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialized medical treatment following a directive from the Makindye Chief Magistrate's Court.
The transfer comes after Chief Magistrate Sarah Basemera declined Lukwago's bail application but ordered prison authorities to ensure he receives a comprehensive medical assessment and treatment at Mulago within 24 hours due to concerns about his deteriorating health.
Lukwago's lawyer, Abubaker Ssekanjako, confirmed that prison authorities complied with the court order.
"It is true. He was transferred to Mulago this morning," Ssekanjako said.
According to the defence, Lukwago's health had continued to worsen while on remand, with claims that his condition was largely being managed through painkillers despite requiring more specialized medical attention.
Although Uganda Prisons has facilitated the transfer, Lukwago remains in lawful custody. Reports indicate he is being guarded by military personnel at Mulago, with access to him tightly controlled in line with prison security procedures. The court also directed that his wife and one lawyer of his choice be granted reasonable access during his treatment, subject to security regulations.
Lukwago remains on remand as he faces a charge of misprision of treason, which he has denied. His case is expected to return to the Makindye Chief Magistrate's Court on June 30, 2026.
