An emotional Erias Lukwago appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrate's Court via Zoom from Luzira Prison, urging the court to either grant him bail to seek specialized medical treatment abroad or allow him access to palliative care as his health continues to deteriorate.

During the virtual proceedings, the former Kampala Lord Mayor presented medical reports from Mulago National Referral Hospital indicating that he suffers from a herniated disc and residual mild cylindrical bronchitis. According to the documents presented in court, specialists recommended that he travel to India for further treatment.

Addressing the court, Lukwago appealed for urgent intervention, arguing that his condition had reached a point where he required immediate medical attention beyond what could be provided while on remand. He asked the court to consider releasing him on bail for treatment or, alternatively, to authorize palliative care while he remains in custody.

The hearing, however, did not result in a ruling on his request.

Court proceedings were adjourned after the presiding magistrate was reported indisposed, forcing another delay in the high-profile case. Lukwago was consequently remanded until July 16, when the matter is expected to return to court.

Lukwago's health has become a central issue in the ongoing proceedings since his detention on charges of misprision of treason. His lawyers have repeatedly maintained that his condition has worsened while in custody, insisting he requires specialized neurological care and continuous medical supervision. Previous court sessions also heard requests for prison authorities to accommodate his medical needs, including access to specialized bedding and treatment.

The latest appearance, conducted remotely because of his medical condition, is likely to intensify debate over his continued detention as supporters and legal observers await the next court session scheduled for July 16.
