Former Speaker Anita Annet Among has resurfaced in Parliament, making her first appearance in House proceedings after an 83-day absence from public view.
Among participated virtually during a parliamentary sitting, marking her first public engagement since disappearing from active political life following the end of her tenure as Speaker and the start of the 12th Parliament.
Her appearance immediately drew attention from legislators and political observers who had closely followed her prolonged absence amid mounting speculation about her health, security situation and political future.
The former Speaker had not been seen publicly since May, when security agencies carried out coordinated operations at several of her residences shortly after the 2026 General Election and the transition to new parliamentary leadership. She also missed the inaugural sitting of the 12th Parliament, where a new Speaker was elected, despite having been sworn in as Bukedea District Woman MP.
During the weeks that followed, reports indicated that security remained deployed at her residence, while access to the property was tightly controlled. Several political leaders who visited her later acknowledged concerns about her health, although government officials did not publicly explain the continued security presence.
Among's virtual participation is likely to ease some speculation surrounding her condition, although it remains unclear when she will physically return to Parliament.
The former Speaker, who led Uganda's 11th Parliament after succeeding the late Jacob Oulanyah in 2022, remains the elected Woman MP for Bukedea District and the NRM's Second National Vice Chairperson (Female). Her political future has remained a subject of intense public interest following her exit from the Speakership and the sweeping changes that ushered in the 12th Parliament.
While her appearance was virtual rather than in person, it represents the first visible sign of her re-engagement with parliamentary business since her prolonged absence began, potentially signalling a gradual return to active legislative duties.
