A proud father-son moment unfolded at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, was presented with a Sandhurst Alumni Medal while attending the graduation of his son, Officer Cadet Ruhamya Kainerugaba. The decoration added a personal touch to a ceremony marking Ruhamya’s completion of officer training.

Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba was himself in the spotlight at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst on Friday when the Uganda Chief of Defence Forces was honoured with a Sandhurst Alumni Medal as he attended his son’s graduation.

The General was received ahead of the commissioning parade by Major General Nick Cowley OBE, the Academy Commandant, who presented him with the distinctive Sandhurst alumni decoration.

The moment carried special significance for Gen Muhoozi, who is himself a former Sandhurst officer cadet. He graduated from the prestigious British military academy in 2000, before embarking on a military career that has seen him rise through the ranks to become Uganda’s CDF.

The Sandhurst Medal is an official distinction introduced in 2016 to recognise international cadets who successfully complete officer commissioning at the academy. It was later extended to include those completing the Commissioning Course Short.

For Gen Muhoozi, however, Friday’s presentation was particularly symbolic because the alumni medal tradition came into existence after his own time at Sandhurst.

He therefore received the decoration as a former cadet returning to the academy decades later — this time not as a student, but as Uganda’s military chief and a father watching his son take the same professional path.

The attention then shifted to Officer Cadet Ruhamya Kainerugaba, who officially completed his Officer Commissioning Course at Sandhurst during the graduation ceremony.

Ruhamya’s journey at the academy had already attracted considerable attention in Uganda after his father publicly shared updates about his training earlier this year. Gen Muhoozi had described his son as doing “an excellent job” at the prestigious military institution.

The graduation now marks another chapter in a family military connection spanning more than two decades.

Gen Muhoozi’s own Sandhurst experience began in the late 1990s, with his graduation and commissioning in 2000. More than 25 years later, his son has followed him through the same institution and completed his own officer training.

The Sandhurst alumni honour presented to the CDF consequently became one of the standout moments of the day — linking the General’s own military history with his son’s newly completed journey into the officer corps.

With Ruhamya now joining the ranks of Sandhurst-trained officers, the Kainerugaba family’s connection to one of the world’s most renowned military academies has entered a new generation.
