Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, on Wednesday welcomed the newly appointed Chargé d'Affaires of the United States Mission in Uganda, H.E. Mikael (Mika) Cleverley, for high-level discussions aimed at deepening cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting took place in Fort Portal and marked Cleverley's first official engagement with Uganda's military leadership since assuming his diplomatic role last month.

According to the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), the two leaders held discussions on matters of bilateral and mutual interest, with particular emphasis on strengthening defence cooperation and enhancing the longstanding relationship between Uganda and the United States.

While officials did not disclose specific details of the closed-door meeting, the engagement underscores the continued military and diplomatic ties between Kampala and Washington, which have for years collaborated on regional security, peacekeeping, counterterrorism and professional military development.

Cleverley recently assumed duties as the head of the U.S. Mission in Uganda, succeeding previous embassy leadership. His meeting with Gen Muhoozi is seen as an important step in maintaining dialogue on shared security priorities and reinforcing cooperation between the two nations.

The Fort Portal meeting comes at a time when Uganda continues to play a significant role in regional peace and security operations, making defence diplomacy a key pillar of its international engagements.

No further details on the outcomes of the discussions were immediately released.
