The hunt for the next Omukama of Tooro has reportedly produced a decisive outcome.
George Desmond Kamurasi, 36, has emerged as the reported choice of the Royal Succession Committee to succeed the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The development was revealed Thursday evening by journalist Andrew Mwenda, who said the 21-member committee met at Fort Motel in Fort Portal City and selected Kamurasi following a vote.
According to Mwenda, 18 committee members attended the meeting, with 15 voting in favour of George Kamurasi.
The committee, selected by the Babiito Royal Clan to oversee the sensitive succession process, has reportedly been meeting daily since August 31, 2026.
It is chaired by Omusuuga Charles Akiiki Kamurasi, the head of the Babiito Royal Clan and a key figure in Tooro's cultural succession process. The 21-member committee was constituted following meetings by the royal clan in the days after King Oyo's death.
George Desmond Kamurasi is reported to be the son of George Desmond "Jimmy" Mugenyi and a younger brother to the late Omukama Patrick David Matthew Olimi Kaboyo III.
That royal lineage has placed him firmly within the family tree being considered for the kingdom's next monarch.
The reported decision comes after several days of intense discussions surrounding the future of the Tooro throne following the death of King Oyo, whose passing plunged the kingdom into mourning and triggered a major debate over succession.
A 21-member committee of Babiito elders was officially tasked with identifying and eventually presenting a successor through the kingdom's established cultural structures.
Mwenda further revealed that he had discussed the development with Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and Chief of Land Forces Gen Kayanja Muhanga, saying Gen Kainerugaba endorsed the choice made by the succession committee.
The formal cultural announcement and subsequent steps toward the installation of the next Omukama are now expected to attract intense national attention.
For now, the reported selection of George Desmond Kamurasi marks the biggest development yet in the race to fill one of Uganda's most historic cultural thrones.
