Uganda's medal account at the 2026 Commonwealth Games is officially open after para swimmer Husnah Kukundakwe claimed a brilliant silver medal in the women's SB8 100m Breaststroke final.
Kukundakwe produced an outstanding swim, touching the wall in 1:26.20 to finish second behind England's Brock Whiston, who lived up to her billing as the event favourite by taking gold. England's Iona Winnifrith completed the podium with bronze.
The result is more than just Uganda's first medal of the Glasgow 2026 Games. It is also a landmark achievement for the country, with Kukundakwe becoming the first Ugandan to win a Commonwealth Games medal in swimming and the nation's first medal in a Para sport at the Games.
The 19-year-old, who has represented Uganda at two Paralympic Games, entered the competition with genuine medal hopes after consistently improving on the international stage. She delivered when it mattered most, swimming a personal-best style race to secure a place on the podium and spark celebrations among the Ugandan contingent.
Kukundakwe's achievement adds another memorable chapter to her rapidly growing career and provides Team Uganda with a major boost as the Commonwealth Games continue.
With the silver medal safely secured, Uganda's athletes will now look to build on the momentum as they chase more podium finishes in Glasgow.
