A simmering power struggle inside the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has burst into the open after outgoing Secretary General David Kabanda revealed why he decided to walk away from one of the pressure group’s most influential offices.
Speaking after his resignation became public, Kabanda disclosed that he first informed PLU Chairperson Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba of his intention to leave before any public announcement was made.
But it was his explanation that is now raising eyebrows within political circles.
Kabanda claimed that some individuals within the organization viewed the office as an avenue for personal financial gain and saw him as a stumbling block to their interests.
According to him, certain members believed he was preventing them from accessing money-making opportunities associated with the organization. He suggested that competing interests had emerged within PLU, making his position increasingly difficult.
The Kasambya County legislator said he chose to step aside and allow others to take leadership responsibilities while he focuses on serving his constituents in Parliament.
The development triggered swift action from Gen. Muhoozi, who announced the appointment of Fadil Twalla as the new Secretary General of PLU.
In a post on X, Gen. Muhoozi confirmed the leadership change but made it clear that Kabanda remains part of the organization’s top leadership structure as a member of the PLU Central Committee.
The transition comes at a time when PLU continues to attract attention as one of Uganda’s most closely watched political pressure groups, with observers keenly following any shifts within its leadership ranks.
For now, Kabanda has exited the secretary general’s office, but his comments about internal interests and alleged attempts to use the position for financial gain are likely to keep tongues wagging in Kampala’s political corridors for days to come.
