A new political battle is taking shape after Kasambya County MP David Kabanda revealed that a Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) operation linked to the future of Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi is already in motion.

The development comes days after PLU chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba publicly directed the organization to explore ways of removing Ssenyonyi from the influential opposition office.

Kabanda, who recently stepped down as PLU Secretary General but remains a member of the organization's central committee, quickly signaled his readiness to act. In remarks that attracted widespread attention, he suggested that the mission could be accomplished within a short period, fueling speculation about what steps may follow.

The announcement has triggered sharp reactions across Uganda's political landscape.

Supporters of the move argue that political competition naturally extends to leadership positions within Parliament. Critics, however, insist that the office of Leader of the Opposition cannot simply be taken away through political declarations.

Legal and parliamentary observers point out that any attempt to remove Ssenyonyi would require established parliamentary procedures and significant backing from opposition legislators. Ssenyonyi currently occupies the position through nomination by the National Unity Platform (NUP), the largest opposition party in Parliament.

The situation has generated growing curiosity because neither Gen. Muhoozi nor Kabanda has publicly disclosed the exact strategy behind the operation. That secrecy has only intensified discussion among political supporters, analysts and social media users.

The development also arrives amid continued speculation about internal shifts within PLU following recent changes in the organization's leadership structure.

For now, no formal parliamentary process targeting Ssenyonyi has been announced, and the Nakawa West MP remains firmly in office.

With political attention now focused on PLU's next move, many are waiting to see whether Kabanda's promised operation will translate into concrete parliamentary action or remain a bold political challenge that reshapes the conversation around Uganda's opposition leadership.
