Fresh debate has erupted around the ongoing treason trial of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye after Andrew Wilson, a British-American security consultant identified by prosecutors as one of their key witnesses, published a strongly worded article targeting Winnie Byanyima, Besigye’s wife and Executive Director of UNAIDS.

In the article, Wilson questioned why Byanyima has not been included among those facing prosecution, arguing that authorities should examine whether her alleged support for her husband’s activities warrants further investigation.

“If the head of a major UN agency has a direct personal stake in a terrorism prosecution… why has she not been investigated for possible complicity, obstruction, or witness intimidation?” Wilson wrote.

His comments have quickly attracted attention because Wilson is expected to play a significant role in the prosecution’s case against Besigye, who is facing treason charges alongside Hajj Obeid Lutale and UPDF Capt. Denis Oola. Prosecutors allege the accused conspired to overthrow the Ugandan government through meetings held in Uganda and abroad, accusations they have consistently denied.

Wilson’s latest intervention has also reignited discussion about his credibility as a prosecution witness. Critics argue that publicly expressing opinions about individuals connected to the case while court proceedings are ongoing could invite scrutiny over his impartiality. Others, however, contend that his article merely reflects his personal views and does not necessarily affect the evidence he may present before the court.

Neither the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions nor investigators have publicly indicated that Winnie Byanyima is under investigation or faces any criminal charges related to the treason case.

Byanyima has consistently defended her husband, maintaining that the charges against him are politically motivated and insisting he is innocent. She has repeatedly called for his release and has raised concerns about his detention, health and the fairness of the judicial process.

The development comes as the High Court continues handling procedural matters in the closely watched case, with the prosecution having disclosed its evidence ahead of witness testimony.
