The political temperature around former Speaker Anita Among has risen again after reports emerged of plans to organise celebrations following her release from house arrest.
Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, was reported to have issued a stern warning against anyone planning to turn Among's newfound freedom into a major political celebration, injecting fresh tension into an already controversial chapter in Uganda's ruling establishment.
Among, however, has moved to distance herself from the alleged plans, maintaining that she did not authorise any celebration and that no gathering was being organised by her inner circle.
The former Speaker's freedom became one of Uganda's biggest political talking points after Muhoozi announced in August that President Yoweri Museveni had directed that restrictions on her movement be lifted and that she would not face prosecution over allegations that had been under investigation. Among subsequently publicly thanked Museveni for what she described as an act of mercy and thanked Muhoozi for his professionalism during the ordeal.
Among had spent months under heavy security restrictions following a dramatic corruption investigation that saw security agencies raid properties linked to her in Kampala and Bukedea.
The probe involved allegations of corruption, abuse of office, illicit enrichment and money laundering. Several luxury vehicles were seized during the investigations, including a Rolls-Royce Cullinan that had become a major subject of public debate.
Her eventual release dramatically changed the political narrative, but it also triggered sharp public debate.
While some supporters welcomed her freedom and argued that the former Speaker deserved another chance, critics questioned whether political forgiveness should bring an end to demands for accountability over allegations that had dominated national debate for months.
The controversy surrounding a possible celebration has now added another layer to the drama.
Among's decision to distance herself from any planned party appears aimed at preventing her release from being interpreted as a political victory parade at a time when questions surrounding the broader anti-corruption campaign remain highly sensitive.
Her release also comes against the backdrop of an earlier political fallout involving Muhoozi's Patriotic League of Uganda, which withdrew its support for Among during the heated controversy surrounding her political future and her acquisition of a luxury Rolls-Royce.
For now, no celebration linked to Among's release has taken place.
But the episode has once again exposed the complicated intersection of power, forgiveness and accountability within Uganda's political establishment.
Among may be free, but the public debate surrounding her dramatic fall, months of investigations and equally dramatic return to political life is far from over.
