Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi has been arraigned before the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court, where prosecutors accused him of inciting violence and belonging to or holding an unlawful society, according to information shown in the court update shared online.
The court appearance follows Kivumbi’s arrest in the aftermath of violent incidents that occurred in Butambala District during the January 2026 general election period. Prosecutors initially presented charges including incitement to violence and related offences before later amending the case and preferring terrorism charges under Uganda’s Anti-Terrorism Act against Kivumbi and several co-accused.
State prosecutors allege that the accused were involved in acts intended to intimidate or influence the government during unrest in parts of Butambala, including Kibibi and Gombe town councils. Kivumbi has consistently denied wrongdoing through his legal team.
The prosecution’s case has attracted national attention, with the matter moving beyond the magistrate’s court as investigations progressed. Earlier this month, the International Crimes Division of the High Court granted Kivumbi and several co-accused bail after months on remand, imposing conditions that include regular reporting to court and restrictions on foreign travel while proceedings continue.
