A new era is on the horizon for one of Uganda's most strategic transport corridors as construction of the new Karuma Bridge draws closer.
The Government of Uganda has officially signed the civil works contract for the long-awaited bridge, paving the way for groundbreaking activities in September before full-scale construction begins in October along the Kampala-Gulu Highway.
The new bridge will replace the ageing Karuma Bridge, which has served the country for decades but has increasingly required major rehabilitation works in recent years due to structural wear. Those repairs caused repeated traffic disruptions and highlighted the urgent need for a modern replacement.
Government says the new structure will significantly improve road safety while enhancing the movement of passengers and cargo between central and northern Uganda. It is also expected to strengthen regional trade by improving connectivity to South Sudan and other East African markets.
The project is being financed by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), with Japanese construction firm Zenitaka Corporation selected to undertake the works. The company previously delivered the New Nile Bridge in Jinja.
Officials have described the bridge as a critical investment in Uganda's transport network, saying it will improve resilience, reduce travel disruptions and support long-term economic growth by ensuring safer and more reliable movement along one of the country's busiest highways.
With preparations now entering the final stages ahead of construction, motorists and businesses that rely on the Kampala-Gulu corridor are expected to benefit from a modern crossing designed to serve Uganda's growing transport and trade needs for generations to come.
