Newly elected Members of Uganda’s 12th Parliament will receive government funds to purchase their official vehicles by July 10, 2026, Finance Minister Henry Musasizi has confirmed.

The announcement was made during the ongoing induction seminar for legislators at Speke Resort Munyonyo, where the minister assured MPs that the vehicle funds had been included in the government’s first-quarter releases for the 2026/27 financial year.

Responding to concerns from lawmakers over when the facilitation would be released, Musasizi said the government had already prioritized the payment and instructed officials at the Ministry of Finance to ensure it is included in the first batch of quarterly disbursements.

Government releases funds on a quarterly basis, with the first quarter running from July to September. Musasizi explained that the initial releases are scheduled by July 10, assuring legislators that the money for their vehicles would be available within that timeline.

Each MP is expected to receive approximately Shs315 million to purchase an official vehicle, following Parliament’s approval of Shs166.8 billion in the 2026/27 budget to facilitate transport for members of the new Parliament.

The vehicle allocation is intended to support legislators in carrying out constituency work, including monitoring government programmes, engaging voters, and fulfilling their parliamentary oversight responsibilities.

Beyond the vehicle funding, Musasizi reminded MPs that Parliament’s role extends beyond passing the national budget. He urged legislators to actively scrutinize government expenditure, examine reports from the Auditor General and accountability committees, and ensure public resources deliver value to Ugandans through effective oversight.

The planned release of the vehicle funds is expected to reignite public debate over parliamentary spending, with supporters arguing that reliable transport is essential for constituency representation, while critics continue to question the timing of the expenditure amid competing national priorities.
