Uganda’s political corridors exploded into fresh debate after the release of a brand-new Cabinet lineup that has already triggered intense reactions across Kampala power circles.
The biggest talking points? The surprise entry of Dr. Lawrence Muganga into government, the elevation of media personality and political mobiliser Justine Nameere, and several heavyweight political figures either repositioned, promoted or quietly pushed out.
President Yoweri Museveni retained key pillars of his government, keeping H.E. Jessica Alupo as Vice President and Robinah Nabbanja as Prime Minister.
But the real drama began deeper inside the Cabinet list.
Former Victoria University vice chancellor Dr. Lawrence Muganga has now landed a government role as Minister of State for Internal Affairs, a move already causing massive discussion in education, leadership and governance circles.
Political watchers say Muganga’s entry signals a strategic shift toward technocrats and public intellectuals as government prepares for a high-pressure political cycle.
Justine Nameere also emerged among the surprise beneficiaries after being named Minister of State for Local Government.
Her appointment instantly sparked online reactions due to her long history in political mobilisation, media influence and youth-focused campaigns.
Meanwhile, some of the country’s most powerful ministries also saw major adjustments.
Henry Musasizi takes over the Finance Ministry. Adonia Ayebare enters as Foreign Affairs Minister. Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde was named Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development in another eyebrow-raising deployment.
In the security sector, Jim Muhwezi remains influential under the Office of the President in charge of Security, while Kiryowa Kiwanuka takes Defence and Veterans Affairs.
One of the most talked-about twists is the transfer of Dr. Kenneth Omona out of mainstream Cabinet and into diplomatic service as ambassador at a station yet to be announced.
Another bombshell is the placement of several senior political figures as Presidential Advisors, including Hamson Obua, Ruth Nankabirwa, Evelyn Anite and Francis Mwebesa.
In education, Janet Museveni retains the powerful Education and Sports docket, while Peter Ogwang keeps sports affairs.
The trade ministry also drew attention after businessman Sanjay Tanna was named Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, with Gen. Wilson Mbadi becoming Minister of State for Trade.
Across social media, the Cabinet reshuffle is already being interpreted as a carefully calculated balancing act involving technocrats, political loyalists, regional interests and emerging public figures.
Now all eyes are on how the new ministers will perform and whether this fresh Cabinet marks the beginning of a bigger political strategy heading toward Uganda’s next major electoral battles.
