Tension is exploding behind the scenes of Uganda’s political establishment after powerful rumors emerged claiming that preparations are quietly being made for former Speaker Anita Among to be taken to Luzira Prison if the ongoing corruption investigations take a darker turn.
For days now, Kampala’s political corridors have been flooded with whispers that the once untouchable parliamentary powerhouse could soon face criminal charges linked to illicit enrichment and money laundering.
The claims, first amplified by social media bloggers and insider political circles, allege that prison officers at Luzira have allegedly been alerted to prepare for a high-profile detainee as detectives intensify investigations surrounding Among’s wealth, properties and luxury assets.
The developments come at a time when pressure around Among is already reaching boiling point.
Security operatives and investigators recently carried out dramatic searches on properties linked to her in Kampala and Wakiso. Expensive vehicles, including a luxury Rolls-Royce Cullinan, were reportedly seized as investigators widened what is becoming one of the most explosive corruption probes in recent Ugandan political history.
Sources within legal and political circles now claim that Among’s lawyers are increasingly concerned about the direction of the investigations. Insider reports suggest discussions have allegedly shifted from hopes of stopping prosecution to preparations for possible bail applications if charges are eventually sanctioned.
Even more explosive are claims that attempts by some of Among’s confidants to seek political intervention reportedly hit a dead end, deepening anxiety among her supporters.
However, despite the growing storm online and inside government circles, no official agency has yet confirmed that Among is about to be arrested or arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court.
Neither the Inspector General of Government, the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, Uganda Police nor State House has publicly announced criminal charges against her as of now.
Still, the silence itself is only fueling more speculation.
Inside Parliament and across Kampala’s political class, conversations have now shifted from “if” to “when.”
The irony of the situation has also not been lost on critics, with many online users revisiting Among’s past support for tougher bail conditions and stricter judicial measures, arguing that the political tides may now be turning against one of the country’s most influential figures.
For now, Anita Among remains free.
But with investigators reportedly closing in and rumors of Luzira preparations refusing to die down, Uganda’s political elite are watching nervously to see whether the scandal ends in headlines or handcuffs.
