There was more than a place in the Uganda Rugby Premiership final at stake on Saturday.
Stanbic Black Pirates stepped onto the Kyadondo turf carrying the weight of heartbreak following the tragic death of teammate Sydney Gongodyo, and they responded with a powerful 15-3 victory over Platinum Credit Heathens in the first leg of their semi-final clash.
The atmosphere was emotional from the first whistle. Fans packed the stands, waving flags and rallying behind a Pirates side determined to honor the memory of the 27-year-old forward, who was killed on June 5 during a mob attack in Kampala despite being innocent.
Driven by that emotion, the Pirates struck early and never looked back.
Eric Mulamula and Alex Aturinda crossed for crucial tries, while Timothy Kisiga and William Nkore added valuable kicks as the hosts built an 8-0 advantage by halftime.
Every tackle, every carry and every point seemed to carry extra meaning.
Captain Isaac Massanganzira stepped into Gongodyo’s flank position and led from the front, helping the Pirates maintain control against a Heathens side that struggled to break through a fired-up defense.
As the final whistle sounded, the scoreboard read 15-3, but for many inside Kyadondo, the victory represented far more than rugby.
The triumph came just days after four suspects were charged with murder in connection with Gongodyo’s death. The accused have been remanded and are expected back in court on June 23.
Now, with one foot in the final, the Pirates turn their attention to the return leg carrying momentum, belief and an emotional mission.
For the Black Pirates, this title chase has become something bigger.
It is now a fight to honor Sydney Gongodyo’s memory and based on Saturday’s performance, his teammates are determined to keep that dream alive.
