Speculation has intensified over the future of staff at Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda following recent discussions between Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and the company's leadership regarding the reopening of the media group's operations.
A number of social media posts have alleged that some journalists and editors could be dismissed as part of conditions for reopening the broadcaster and newspaper group. The posts further claim that recruitment would focus on what are described as "professional journalists" rather than individuals engaged in political activism.
However, these claims have not been independently verified, and neither Nation Media Group nor Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has publicly confirmed that specific employees have been earmarked for dismissal or that any list of journalists is being used as part of ongoing negotiations.
Similarly, claims circulating online that particular journalists—including NTV Akawungeezi presenter Solomon Kaweesi—are among those allegedly targeted remain unsubstantiated. No official statement has named any employee in connection with the reported discussions.
What has been confirmed publicly is that Gen. Muhoozi recently met NMG's leadership as talks continue over the reopening of the media group's outlets after they were shut down by security forces. Officials have indicated that discussions are ongoing, but no detailed agreement on staffing arrangements has been made public.
Until official announcements are issued by the relevant parties, reports about planned dismissals, recruitment conditions or restrictions affecting individual journalists should be treated as unverified claims rather than established fact.
