President Paul Kagame on Saturday welcomed Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in Kigali for high-level discussions aimed at reinforcing ties between Rwanda and Uganda.
According to the Rwandan Presidency, the meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two neighbouring countries, while also addressing regional peace, security and stability issues that continue to dominate the agenda in the Great Lakes region.
Gen. Muhoozi is in Rwanda on an official working visit that also includes engagements with senior commanders of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF). His visit is expected to further enhance military-to-military cooperation and explore areas of mutual interest between the two defence forces.
The meeting marks another chapter in the steadily improving relationship between Kampala and Kigali after years of diplomatic tensions that strained political, economic and security ties.
In recent years, both countries have taken deliberate steps to rebuild trust through high-level engagements, cross-border cooperation and regular military dialogue. These efforts have contributed to improved relations and enhanced collaboration on regional security matters.
The latest engagement comes at a time when security challenges in the Great Lakes region, particularly in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, continue to demand closer cooperation among neighbouring states.
Officials from both countries have consistently emphasized that sustained dialogue and defence cooperation remain essential to promoting long-term peace, stability and security across the region.
