Is There More to Erias Lukwago’s Arrest Than Meets the Eye?

According to accounts from his family, armed operatives reportedly entered his residence and took him away without presenting a warrant. Hours later, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba shared an image appearing to show Lukwago blindfolded in custody, further intensifying public attention on the incident.

On the surface, it is another high-profile political arrest in a country that has seen its fair share of confrontations between state authorities and opposition figures. Yet several aspects of this particular case have left many observers asking whether there is more to the story than has so far been made public.

Lukwago was reportedly preparing to serve legal documents linked to Gen. Muhoozi over previous statements directed at opposition veteran Dr. Kizza Besigye. The timing alone has fueled speculation, with supporters questioning whether the arrest was merely coincidental or connected to broader developments unfolding behind the scenes.

One theory now being discussed emerged from former legislator and political commentator Munyagwa Mubarak, popularly known as “Mugati Gwa Bata.” Appearing on Kasuku Live, a YouTube-based news and gossip platform, Munyagwa suggested that Gen. Muhoozi may have been given information alleging that Dr. Besigye and members of his political camp were plotting to assassinate President Yoweri Museveni.

Munyagwa stressed that he personally believed such information may have been inaccurate or exaggerated. However, he argued that if Gen. Muhoozi genuinely received intelligence portraying Besigye and his associates as a threat to the President’s life, it could help explain the increasingly hostile relationship between the military commander and individuals associated with the opposition leader.

While no public evidence has been presented to support the alleged assassination claims, Munyagwa’s remarks have added another layer to an already complex situation. They raise the possibility that decisions being made behind the scenes could be influenced by intelligence assessments, perceptions, or information not yet available to the public.

Supporters of the government argue that security agencies may possess information that cannot be disclosed immediately for national security reasons. Critics, however, maintain that without transparency, speculation inevitably fills the gap.

The result is a growing list of unanswered questions. Why was such a prominent lawyer arrested in such dramatic fashion? Why has there been limited official communication regarding the reasons for his detention? And why did the events unfold at this particular moment, when tensions surrounding Dr. Besigye’s legal battles were already escalating?

Until clear answers emerge, the arrest of Erias Lukwago is likely to remain more than just a legal story. It has become a political mystery, one that continues to generate far more questions than answers.
