Fresh questions are being raised following the arrest of senior People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) leader Dr. Moses Mukose after he was detained on Saturday night at Mulago National Referral Hospital before later being released on police bond.
Dr. Mukose, who serves as the PFF Busoga Sub-region Governor, was reportedly intercepted in the hospital’s heavily guarded VIP section, where security has been heightened due to the admission of veteran opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye. Reports indicate he was taken to Mulago Police Station and spent the night in custody before being released.
Authorities reportedly questioned why the senior opposition official was in the restricted area, with allegations emerging that he had strayed into the VIP section without authorization. Dr. Mukose, however, rejected any wrongdoing, maintaining that he had gone to Mulago to visit his father-in-law, who is admitted on the same floor.
The explanation has done little to silence speculation.
Given Dr. Mukose’s senior position within the People’s Front for Freedom, the political party associated with Dr. Kizza Besigye, some observers have questioned whether it was merely a coincidence that his hospitalized relative was being treated on the same ward where Besigye is receiving medical care. Others have argued there is no evidence to dispute his account and have cautioned against drawing conclusions without proof.
The incident has nevertheless intensified public discussion over the strict security measures surrounding Besigye’s treatment. The opposition leader has remained at the center of a politically charged legal battle, with his health and access to medical care attracting widespread public attention in recent months.
Supporters of Dr. Mukose have described the arrest as unnecessary, arguing that relatives should not face detention while visiting family members in hospital. Critics, however, have questioned why a senior opposition figure ended up inside one of the country’s most heavily secured hospital sections.
Police had not publicly released detailed findings about the incident by the time of publication, and no evidence has been made public to substantiate allegations that Dr. Mukose intended to access or monitor Dr. Besigye’s security arrangements.
With Dr. Mukose now free on police bond, the episode is likely to fuel further political debate over security operations at Mulago and the treatment of opposition figures and their associates as the country continues to witness heightened political tensions.
