Ugandan football has suffered another setback after the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) officially withdrew the Uganda U23 national team, the Uganda Kobs, from the 2027 AFCON U23 Qualifiers.
The Kobs had been scheduled to face Ethiopia in the first qualification round, with the two-legged tie set to be played between September 20 and October 6, 2026.
But in a statement released Tuesday evening, FUFA confirmed that the team would no longer take part in the campaign.
The federation linked the decision to financial limitations, explaining that government funding priorities for the 2026/27 financial year have shifted heavily towards preparations for the Uganda Cranes and the country's hosting of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
FUFA described the decision as painful, particularly because it directly affects players from the previous Uganda Hippos U20 generation who were expected to graduate into the U23 setup.
The development comes as Uganda races against time to prepare for the historic 2027 AFCON, which the country will co-host alongside Kenya and Tanzania under the PAMOJA arrangement.
Government and football authorities have been directing major resources towards infrastructure, tournament organisation and preparations for the continental showpiece, with CAF and the three host nations intensifying coordination ahead of the tournament.
However, the withdrawal raises fresh concerns about the future of youth football development in Uganda.
The U23 AFCON qualifiers have traditionally provided a crucial bridge between junior national teams and the senior Uganda Cranes, giving emerging players a platform to compete internationally before making the leap to the biggest stage.
FUFA said engagements with government are continuing and promised to provide further information regarding the participation of other national teams in upcoming international competitions.
Among the teams awaiting clarity are the Uganda Cubs, Uganda Rhinos, Uganda Hippos, Sand Cranes and the Crested Cranes, all of whom have major assignments scheduled in the coming months.
This is also not the first time funding challenges have forced Uganda out of the U23 continental qualification process. The Kobs were similarly withdrawn from the 2023 AFCON U23 campaign due to financial constraints.
For now, Uganda's young stars who had hoped to represent the country against Ethiopia and fight for a place at the 2027 U23 AFCON will have to wait for another opportunity — another painful reminder of the financial balancing act facing Ugandan football as the country prepares for its biggest sporting moment yet.
