TAX FIRE! Ugandans ERUPT As New Government Taxes Threaten Prices, Nightlife & Entertainment Industry

Pressure is building fast across Uganda after fresh government tax proposals triggered anger among traders, entertainers and ordinary citizens already battling high living costs.

The proposed measures, which are now dominating political talk shows, TikTok discussions and Kampala business circles, could affect imported products, alcohol, entertainment businesses and several everyday consumer goods.

And the reaction has been immediate.

In downtown Kampala, traders were already warning customers about possible price increases even before final approvals are made. Some business owners fear the new tax burden could force them to raise prices again at a time when many Ugandans are already struggling with rent, transport and food costs.

But the biggest noise online is coming from the entertainment industry.

Several local artists, event promoters and nightlife players are privately expressing concern that higher taxes could hit concerts, bars, imported drinks and events hard especially during a period when the industry is still fighting to recover financially.

On X and TikTok, Ugandans spent the day debating whether government is “squeezing citizens too much” as screenshots of proposed tax discussions spread rapidly online.

Others defended the move, arguing that Uganda needs stronger local revenue collection to fund infrastructure, security and public services.

Still, frustration appears to be growing among young Ugandans who say nearly everything is becoming expensive at once.

In some Kampala bars and hangout spots Tuesday night, conversations reportedly shifted from football and celebrity gossip to taxes, prices and survival fears.

“This economy is becoming serious,” one reveller was heard saying during a heated discussion in Kololo.

Political analysts now expect intense debate in Parliament as pressure mounts on lawmakers to explain how the new measures will affect ordinary citizens.

Meanwhile, social media is already turning the situation into memes, jokes and angry viral posts, a sign that this tax conversation is only getting hotter.
