Uganda Airlines' recovery strategy is beginning to take shape, with Acting Chief Executive Officer Ato Girma Wake expressing confidence that the national carrier is on a stronger footing after months of operational reforms.
Speaking in a recent interview, Wake pointed to significant improvements in the airline's day-to-day operations, highlighting better on-time performance and the return of previously grounded aircraft to active service. He said restoring operational reliability has been a key priority as the airline works to regain passenger confidence and strengthen its reputation.
Beyond improving flight schedules, Wake emphasized that Uganda's aviation ambitions extend far beyond transporting passengers. He said sustainable growth will require investment in the wider aviation ecosystem, including training the next generation of pilots, engineers, and aviation professionals.
One of the flagship initiatives is a partnership supported by Boeing to strengthen pilot training at Soroti Flying School. Wake described the investment as a strategic move to develop local aviation talent and reduce dependence on foreign training institutions, creating a stronger pipeline of skilled professionals for Uganda's growing aviation industry.
He also defended the airline's decision to deepen its partnership with Boeing, saying the manufacturer offers extensive technical support across Africa and has demonstrated a strong commitment to helping African carriers build long-term operational capacity. The partnership comes as Uganda Airlines advances plans to modernize and expand its fleet while positioning Entebbe as a regional aviation hub.
Industry observers say the airline has made visible progress since Wake assumed interim leadership earlier this year. Operational reforms, closer engagement with aviation stakeholders, and renewed government support have helped restore confidence after a challenging period marked by management changes and service disruptions.
Wake, a respected African aviation veteran best known for leading Ethiopian Airlines through years of expansion, has repeatedly stressed that lasting success will depend on discipline, consistency, and strong governance rather than rapid growth alone. His leadership has focused on stabilizing operations before pursuing ambitious expansion plans.
As Uganda Airlines continues implementing its recovery roadmap, management believes improved service reliability, investment in aviation skills, and strategic fleet development will position the national carrier for sustained regional growth while rebuilding trust among travelers and industry partners.
